Limestone worktop care

Limestone is a natural sedimentary stone with a warm, timeless look — porous and sensitive to acids, so it needs regular care and careful use.

General information and material properties

Limestone is a natural sedimentary stone characterised by its soft appearance, warm tones and timeless aesthetic. Like marble, it belongs to the group of more sensitive stones.

Limestone is porous, can absorb liquids and is sensitive to acids and chemicals. It therefore needs regular care and careful use.

Good to know

  • Very porous material → absorbs liquids
  • Very sensitive to acids (vinegar, lemon, wine)
  • Needs regular sealing

Sealing

A limestone worktop must be sealed to reduce the absorption of liquids and dirt. Sealing does not make the surface completely waterproof, but it significantly reduces the risk of damage.

Sealing is recommended every 3–6 months, depending on use.

What to do

  • Seal regularly
  • Check the condition of the surface often

What to avoid

  • Don’t leave liquids on the surface
  • Don’t use unsuitable care products

Daily cleaning

Limestone must be cleaned with very gentle products. Acidic and harsh cleaners can damage the surface and leave light-coloured etch marks.

Use a soft cloth and a neutral or stone-specific cleaner. Always dry the surface after cleaning.

Recommended

  • Microfibre cloth or soft sponge
  • Neutral or stone-friendly cleaner
  • Deal with dirt quickly

Avoid

  • Acids (lemon, vinegar, wine, etc.)
  • Abrasive cleaning products
  • Harsh chemicals

Stains and damage

Limestone is very sensitive and can easily suffer both stains and chemical etching. Acidic substances damage the stone surface and leave permanent marks.

It is important to act quickly when removing stains, but deeply absorbed stains may require professional restoration.

Problem Solution
Coffee, tea, wine Clean immediately with a neutral product
Grease Mild degreaser
Acid marks (etching) May require polishing
Deep stain Professional cleaning

Use and durability

Limestone is not intended for very intensive kitchen use. It is better suited to decorative surfaces, bathrooms or lower-traffic areas.

Use chopping boards and trivets, and avoid dropping heavy objects on the surface.

Quick overview

  • Needs regular sealing
  • Very sensitive to acids
  • Clean gently
  • Best suited to lighter-use areas
